The Achilles heel of the C96 design.  In the Paul Mauser Archives we found a letter, dating from the 25 th   of    September,    1918,    written    by    a    concerned    sergeant,    Richard Piehler,    who    served    as    a    replacement-armourer    in    Vilnius,    the capital   of   Lithuania,   which   was   occupied   by   Germany   from   1915- 1918.   The    sergeant    describes    how    the    pistol’s    features    caused deadly   accidents   during   training   of   new   troops   and   he   talks   about   a case which took place in 1915 in his unit...
